Cheap Flights to Malta 2021

Home > Malta Flights: A guide to flying to Malta

Malta is only about 3 1/2 hour flight from the UK (1112 miles from London Gatwick) and because of it's location as the furthest south you can travel and still be in Europe, it make an ideal place for a budget winter holiday as well as a very popular summer beach holiday destination. Really good deals are available at most times of the year to Malta’s Luqa Airport. I have sometimes seen deals as low as £50 return for Malta flights. Below are some links for cheap flights to Malta, but also try companies like Expedia and (link on my package tour holidays to Malta page) as they often have the cheapest options.

Airlines that Fly to Malta

Because Malta is such a popular beach holiday destination and it is still in Europe, there are many airlines that fly to Malta, including many of the budget airlines. This means that there is plenty of competition amongst the airlines, making the prices very competitive. The most well known airlines that fly direct to Malta Luqa International from the UK include:

  • Air Malta
  • British Airways
  • FlyThomasCook
  • EasyJet
  • Ryanair

When Cheap Flights are not so Cheap

When comparing cheap flights to Malta with the budget airlines like Ryanair, just be aware of their hidden costs like credit and debit card charges that can sometimes make the flight more expensive than traveling on the much more comfortable airlines like British Airways and Air Malta. Take a look at a blog post I wrote on the subject of Ryanair's hidden costs to their "cheap" flights for more information on their outrageous charges.

Flights only from Package Tour Operators

Another option when searching for cheap flights to Malta is to book your flight through the large internet package tour operators like, Thomas Cook, and Expedia and select the flight only option on their websites. One advantage of this method over booking directly with one airline is often the cheapest flights to Malta involve one airline for the outward journey and a different one for the return flight.'s booking system is particularly good for comparing the cost of flights this way: Check out my page Package Holidays to Malta to see a list of operators who offer services to Malta, making it simple to compare flight prices.

Cheap Flights To Malta

As mentioned above you can either search for cheap flights to Malta, through the airlines themselves, take a look at the package tour operators who travel to Malta and select the flight only option or there are a few price comparison website now available for flights. The advantage of these over booking directly with the airline is that the cheapest option may be to fly out on one carrier and back again on another, these comparison sites will show you the cheapest flight each way. Below are a couple of good examples.

More on Airlines that Fly to Malta:

Air Malta fly direct to Luqa Malta International airport from the following UK airports: London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Aberdeen. I have flown with them before and highly recommend them. They offer some excellent deals that often compete with the low cost airlines and you get all the advantages that come with traveling on a national carrier - like in flight food and no hidden charges. is a low-cost airline, which offers cheap flights to Malta. They operate from a range of regional airports throughout the week to loads of short-haul and long-haul destinations. Their direct flights to Malta depart from a huge range of Uk airports including London Gatwick, Norwich, Exeter, Bristol, East Midlands, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds/Bradford, Newcastle, Glasgow and Cardiff.

Ryanair: Whilst it cannot be denied that of all the airlines, Ryanair often advertise the cheapest flights, but what they don't show you up front are all the hidden costs that they add onto your flight. You have to pay a credit card and debit card fee of £4.75 Per passenger Per One Way Flight as well a fee for each persons baggage and many other hidden costs and for this reason their flights end up being even more expensive than the national carriers like Air Malta and British Airways. So always keep this in mind when booking with them. For more information take a look at a article I wrote on Ryanair's Hidden costs.

Malta Long Weekend Breaks

Because of the competition between the carriers offering cheap flights to Malta and the fact that from most destinations in the UK, it take less than 3 hours before you touch down at Malta’s Luqa Airport. And because the island is so small it will probably take less than half an hour before you are checking in at your hotel. Malta really is becoming a viable option as a long weekend break destination and with the stunning city of Valletta as well as fantastic beaches and weather it is easy to see why.

Flight times to Malta

  • London Gatwick 2 hours 40 minutes 1112 miles
  • Manchester 3 hours 1263 miles
  • Bournemouth 2 hours 44 minutes 1138 miles
  • Bristol 2 hours 50 minutes 1187 miles
  • Dublin 3 hours 13 minutes 1336 miles
  • Glasgow 3 hours 21 minutes 1427 miles
  • Berlin 2 hours 26 minutes 1003 miles
  • Stockholm 3 hours 22 minutes 1443 miles

Times quoted for these flights to Malta can vary depending on weather conditions, and cruising speed of the aeroplane they also include an allowance for 15 minutes taxiing time (in my experience it should probably be much more though!)

Malta International Airport (MLA) Information:

Malta International AirportThe airport is situated only three miles (5km) southeast of Valletta and thus is a quick journey into the city. Even if you are not staying in Valletta it is a short distance to just about anywhere on the island. I have taken a taxi from the airport right to the northern tip of the island before and the journey time seemed about half an hour.

Transfers from the Airport: Malta Airport has an excellent system whereby passengers pre-pay before boarding a taxi, this takes away many of the worries about hiring a taxi in a foreign country. The taxi booth is situated in Arrivals, where the fare can be paid and a voucher obtained for presentation to the taxi driver. A regular bus service operates between the airport and Valetta; the journey time to Valetta is about 15 minutes.

Car Hire: Car rental companies at Malta International include Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, Thrifty and Sixt, take a look at my page on Car Hire in Malta.

Facilities: There are several restaurants, bars and shops and a duty-free outlet in the departure area. Banks and 24-hour foreign exchange bureau are also available. Disabled facilities are good and wheelchairs can be organised though the airlines.

Parking: Parking is available.

Departure tax: None.
